Beauty in the Eye of the Beholder

You know the greatest part about when you cook for us pooches? We don’t complain. You will never hear a dog say that something doesn’t look appetizing. Usually we’ll eat whatever little treats you try to slip us. We are an easy and appreciative audience.

That being said, the recipe that you are about to see might not be very appealing looking when you make it. Do not be discouraged because let me tell you, Shami and I love our batch!

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, we decided to try this recipe for Turkey “Jerky” from Rachael Ray. All cooking equipment varies so you may need to add time. Just feel the cookies to see when they are done.

  • 1 lb ground turkey
  • 1/2 cup grated carrot
  • 2 tbsp organic cranberry sauce or whole-berry cranberry sauce
  • 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil

Preheat the oven to 200 degrees and line a 9X11 inch pan with foil.

Mix all of the ingredients in a bowl. Like making meatloaf or meatballs, this is best done with your hands. Evenly spread the mixture into the pan. Bake for 2 hours.

After 2 hours, take meat out. You will turn the meat out onto a cutting board and cut into strips (or squares or chunks, whatever works). We had to drain off some liquid here as well but the original recipe doesn’t mention that. I think it depends on the ingredients you use. Put back on the pan and cook for an additional 2 hours or longer. You want a jerky consistency so let them go a little longer if they need it.

Let cool completely and store in the refrigerator.

This treat is high protein and grain free. In the spirit of the upcoming holiday, your dog will be thankful!
